About

A man with glasses and a beard, wearing a blue sweatshirt, is sitting at a table inside a store or cafe, smiling and reading a book. On the table, there are three items: a copy of the book "Foreign Country" by Marija Pericic, a green aluminum can, and a glass of beer. Behind him, there is a merch shop with jackets, a sweatshirt, hot sauce bottles, and a neon sign. To the left, a refrigerator filled with bottles and cans of drinks is visible.

Kaya. Wanju. Hello, and welcome to Books in the Brewery.

Our journey began in 2023 as the passion project of Toby Halsey, a Perth-based librarian. Toby recognized a significant modern challenge: the increasing prevalence of adult loneliness, a reality he understood both through broader statistics and personal experience. Driven by a desire to foster connection, he decided to channel his professional skills and personal passion into a simple solution. A book club built on the premise that a good book and a good beer could spark genuine conversation, transforming new acquaintances into friends. This concept quickly blossomed, drawing new members each month and expanding to host vibrant gatherings across multiple suburbs in Perth.

We're also dedicated to sharing compelling Australian literature with a wider audience. That's why we're proud to now offer our Book of the Month to subscribers nationwide, delivering thought-provoking reads directly to readers across Australia.

Building on this growing sense of community, February 2025 marked an exciting new chapter for us. Following a highly successful launch party for Rachael Johns' The Bad Bridesmaid, Books in the Brewery formally began curating and promoting special events for the broader Perth literary community. The enthusiasm for these initial gatherings quickly paved the way for more engaging parties, enriching writer's workshops, and insightful panel discussions, all designed to celebrate and support the world of words.
